(6 in.)], x+334 with 3 tipped-in color plates.  Blank recto, followed by color frontispiece on verso, with tissue guard printed in red; (i) title page; (ii) copyright page;  (iii) dedication (verso blank); (v) foreward {verso blank); (vii) Contents (verso blank); (ix) Illustrations (verso blank); text (1)-334. Illustrations, each with a tissue guard printed in red, face pp. 174, 190, and 218.

Binding:

Red cloth (this cloth is noticeably coarser than the first state, but not of the same texture as the second state); blind-stamped (with the same pattern as the first and second states) on the front cover, but not on the spine; gilt lettering on spine and front cover. Top edge trimmed, otherwise untrimmed. Spine: GALLANTRY | CABELL | HARPERS . Front Cover: GALLANTRY | JAMES BRANCH CABELL (see image above).

The design of the binding is almost uniform with the third state of Chivalry (1909). Both are blind stamped with the same pattern as the first and second states on the front cover. The spine of the third state of Gallantry, however, is also blind stamped to match the earlier states, while the spine of the Chivalry issue is plain.

Frontispiece:

Color plate by Howard Pyle with tissue-guard, inscription on guard sheet (in red) THE DEATH OF CAZIO (see image above).

Dedication:

TO THE MEMORY OF | Midshipman James R. Branch | KILLED AT ANNAPOLIS, NOVEMBER 5, 1905 | THIS VOLUME, SINCE IT TREATS OF GALLANTRY | IS DEDICATED, AS BOTH IN LIFE AND DEATH | AN EXPONENT OF THE WORD'S TRUE | AND HIGHEST MEANING | [device} | [in italic] "A brutish man knoweth not, neither doth a fool | understand this ... Shall the throne of iniquity | have a fellowship with Thee, which frameth mischief | by a law?"

Endpapers:

Green pictorial endpapers identical to those of the first state (and differing from the second, where they were replaced by plain white) (see image above).

Dust jacket / Box:

The decorated box of the first state does not seem to have been provided for the second or later states. The third state perhaps was issued with a plain (or minimally printed) paper wrapper, but we have not seen any surviving examples.

Notes:

All illustrations are by Howard Pyle.
